Page last updated 12th January 2019
We are now taking enquiries for the 2019 season.
Existing players (new players please disregard this): we will write to you in January or February to invite you back for the 2019 season and to confirm arrangements. Your first commitment is likely to be 16th March, but this could change.
Easter is very late in 2019, so we are planning to start the playing season before Easter. We want to avoid fo far as possible any weekend that is next to a school holiday or half term, because we know that people go on holiday! In particular we will not make the mistake of 2018, when the Presentation Evening was held after many schools had broken up. At present, the provisional schedule looks like this:
Try out sessions for new players in School Years 3 to 6:
Saturdays 9, 16 February, 2, 9 March (afternoons, indoors, 3:00pm to 5:00pm At Dame Elizabeth Sports Hall, Woodbrooke Road, Bournville, Birmingham B30 1UL. This may change, but we will let you know if it does.)
Team Building with last year's players:
Saturday 16 March (outdoors 3:00pm to 5:00pm).
Kit distribution evening
indoors: Monday 18th March (mandatory).
League matches etc
betweem 9:00am and 12:00 noon, from 23 March to 22nd June
excluding school holidays and half term; Tournament 29th
June, These are all outdoors.
This might change, in the light of other netball commitments that the organisers and team managers have.
Fuller details, including times, will be on this page nearer to the time: keep looking, or register to get updates.
Since 2003 Bournville & Selly Oak Little League has been a recognised Little League under the auspices of Birmingham City Council Sports Development and follows the Fair Play Charter and (so far as is possible) the rules that were laid down for the running of Little Leagues.
Little League Netball has been established in Birmingham for well over twenty years and aims to provide the opportunity for local girls (school years 3, 4, 5 and 6) to play supervised netball at as low a cost as possible. Our beautiful kit is loaned free on a small deposit. Girls of all abilities are welcome to take part, especially those who have not played netball before, as the aim of the Little League is to provide girls with safe, highly organised and supervised netball at little cost. The League is organised and run by an experienced teacher who holds a Level 2 Coaching qualification from England Netball and is a former County netball player. All our adult personnel have been subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Check (DBS). Our Safeguarding Officer is Mrs Rhiannon Plews.
Our Little League has a number of teams named after British birds. The Little League is set up each year in the Spring Term, and plays in the Summer Term. The cost is £20.00 per year. Kit is loaned on a modest deposit. Our events are normally held on Saturday mornings. We use the Spring Term for welcoming new players and integrating them into teams. In the Summer Term we play league matches most Saturdays.
So far as possible the teams are managed, coached and umpired by senior players from Birmingham City Netball Club. Little League players are encouraged to join the Club: either as Juniors while they are still in Years 3 - 6, or as seniors when they leave the Little League as they enter Year 7.

Congratulations to theSwifts who have won the league convincingly this year! For those who did not do quite so well, remember that Little League is not primarily about winning, but about learning the game and developing skills. Everyone has progressed well this year. Some who in March had never played Netball before have now joined our linked Netball Club and will be playing Intermediate League with us.
We finished the day on 8th July with a series of fun matches with teams of parents, Team Managers and Year Groups. The scores don't really matter, because everyone had a lot of fun in the sweltering heat. The standard of play from the parents was much better than in previous years, and they gave the Team Managers a good run for their money.
On 21st July we held our Presentation Evening and Disco, where everyone got a certificate for playing in the League, and the winners and runners up got medals. Our Year 6 Leavers got a special certificate to put in their Record of Achievement. For each team we gave out awards for the Players' Player of the Year and the Team Managers' Award for Most Improved Player. Our Team Managers and helpers were thanked with gifts of wine or chocolate, depending on their age. After last year's Disco fiasco (the DJ did not turn up), the Disco this year was by Mirror Image Disco who were very good. Sadly many players had already gone on holiday by the time of the Presentation Evening, so next year we plan to hold the Presentation Evening earlier (13th July 2019 is the provisional date).
